Discovering wines for ageing

It is said that wine gets better with age… But do you know what is meant by “wines that are good for ageing”?

They must be long-lived and suitable for long-term conservation, and are mainly established wines or particularly important grape varieties such as the Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Sagrantino, naturally predisposed to long ageing.

To be considered such, a wine must certainly show a high concentration of tannins, natural preservatives already present on the skins of the fruit. The higher the concentration of tannins, the greater the ageing potential of the final product in the bottle.

These are mainly the great varieties of Amarone, of Barolo, not by chance the most prestigious, and of Sagrantino.

A wine for ageing is considered a good investment because it is a certainty, studied over the years and already tested for certain labels that increase their value exponentially over time, becoming shelter assets. The most famous example is certainly the Barolo Riserva Monfortino from Conterno, which in each vintage reaches stratospheric scores and values.
