The correction was inevitable, but it also brought prices back to more realistic levels, creating new opportunities for investors with a long-term perspective.

The story changed in 2026. The first half of the year closed in positive territory for the indices tracking the global secondary fine wine market, and the most significant development came from Italy. The index covering the 100 most actively traded Italian wines became the best-performing regional index, rising 1.9% year-to-date—outperforming Burgundy and Champagne, while Bordeaux continues to struggle, weighed down in part by disappointing En Primeur campaigns.

 

The labels driving the recovery

This is far from an abstract trend; it has very specific names behind it.

During the first months of the year, some Italian wines entered the global top ten for price appreciation: Bartolo Mascarello Barolo, Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Vigna Le Rocche Riserva, Gaja Barbaresco, and, from Tuscany, recent vintages of the leading Super Tuscans—Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia, and Tignanello.

The trend confirms what market observers have been noting for some time: throughout the market correction, Italy's top wines held their value better than almost any of their competitors, demonstrating a resilience that is now translating into an earlier recovery.

 

The reasons go far beyond fashion.

First, there is relative value. Wines of comparable critical acclaim still trade at a fraction of the price of their Burgundy counterparts, leaving considerable room for future appreciation.

Second, there is brand strength. Labels such as Ornellaia and Sassicaia have become truly global brands, recognised from Milan to Singapore, while their production volumes remain sufficient to ensure market liquidity—they are relatively easy to buy and resell.

Third, Italian producers have shown remarkable pricing discipline. Production remains limited, recent vintages have been of exceptional quality, and wineries have largely avoided the aggressive release-price increases that have negatively affected other regions.

Further confirmation of the changing market sentiment comes from the auction world—the most sensitive barometer of wine collecting. Major international auction houses are reporting sell-through rates at their highest levels in years, supported by the gradual return of American buyers and improving confidence across Asia.

Meanwhile, buyer behaviour has also shifted. The proportion of transactions initiated by buyers has returned to pre-correction levels, while the gap between asking prices and achieved prices has narrowed significantly. These are classic technical signals of a market that has stopped falling and is beginning to enter a new growth phase

 

What this means for today's buyers

For collectors and long-term investors, today's market presents a rare combination: prices remain close to their lowest levels of the past five years, while market momentum has clearly turned positive.

Historically, the early stages of a recovery tend to reward those who enter the market early and choose carefully, because recoveries are never uniform.

Even within Italy, demand is increasingly concentrated. A relatively small group of iconic labels accounts for most trading activity, while second-tier wines continue to face greater challenges. Careful selection has never been more important.
