Premium wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia
Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region rich in vines, known above all for being considered the land of white wines and is the ideal place for lovers of this wine. As for the production of wines, we can divide this territory into three parts: the flat area with DOC Grave and the DOC wines of Aquileila, Annia and the Latisana plains, the North-East area with DOC Isonzo, Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio, and the Giuliana part with DOC Carso. Each area produces a premium wine of excellent quality.
As mentioned, each grape variety of Friuli Venezia Giulia has its particular characteristics and many fine wines are born from the different grapes. There is Collio, located in the eastern part of the province of Gorizia which is known for the production of white wines, in particular Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla. However, there are also red wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
A journey through the Friuli vineyards that will surprise you
The eastern part is known as Colli Orientali del Friuli, located in the province of Udine. The vines in this area produce wines such as Picolit, Tocai Friulano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanco. With regards to red wines, we have Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and more autochthonous wines such as Schioppetino, Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso and Pignolo.
The area of Grave which extends from the province of Udine to that of Pordenone is the largest in the region where two thirds of the wine production of Friuli Venezia Giulia is concentrated. Among the white wines, we find Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Tocai Friulano; for red wines we have purely international grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. As an autochthonous grape, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, with its unique characteristics has been defined as a difficult wine whose peculiarities are distinguished only after having tasted it several times.
The first DOCG is the region is produced in the area of Ramandolo. The sweet wine Verduzzo Friulano has a soft taste due to very ripe and ‘passito’ grapes. The area of Ramandolo boasts the first DOCG of the region, and the sweet wine Verduzzo Friulano is produced here.
Some of the best labels of Friuli Venezia Giulia
Precisely for this great production of wines, in Friuli Venezia Giulia there are many labels that produce real nectars of the gods. Among these, an example is certainly Picolit of the Rocca Bernarda winery produced in the area of the eastern hills. Its sweet taste hides a fruit aftertaste that makes every sip soft and light. If you would like a good yellow Ribolla, Damijan, with a copper color and a very structured taste is a quality choice at a price that is not excessive. A good tip for Merlot, on the other hand, is that produced by Radikon, certainly a very fine version of this wine with its balanced character which will nevertheless surprise you with every sip.
